Things to Do in Egypt

Things to Do in Egypt

Nile Cruise

The best time for a cruise on the Nile River is between October and the beginning of April. After that, the locks on the Nile River are closed for the season, and while boats still make it upstream due to clever convolutions on the part of tour operators, the weather during the summer is quite hot and a cruise is not as enjoyable an option as it is in the winter months. Occasionally, there is a chance to cruise the Nile on a felucca, which is Egypt’s traditional river sailboat. Felucca cruises are usually shorter than their cruise-ship-variety relatives.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

The Red Sea offers some of the best diving and snorkeling areas in the world, and there are several resorts along the coast ready to offer travelers anything they might need for their dives, from snorkels to air tanks to wetsuits to dive boats to guides. The Red Sea has a complex system of currents, so it is best to go with a guide or a good diver familiar with the area’s caprices. More advanced divers can explore the many wreck sites in the area.

Golf

Avid golfers will love the views from some of Egypt’s golf courses, which are found in some of the most scenic settings in the world, including one near the Great Pyramids. Weather is excellent for golf, although summer is so hot that it’s not the best time to play, and golfers should take serious precautions against heat stroke and dehydration if they choose to attempt it. Many of the courses are part of a hotel or resort complex; those hotels may choose to offer discount golf packages at some times of the year.

Lake Nasser Fishing

Lake Nasser, the biggest man-made lake in the world, can be nearly 200 meters deep in places and is over 600 km long. Conditions for fishing are excellent; Nile perch and tiger fish can both be caught in abundance, and a lucky angler might land a Vundu, the massive catfish. Fly fishers will have an opportunity to ply their trade as well, since the tilapias quite actively pursue the fly.

Bird Watching

People have been traveling to Egypt to watch birds for at least 150 years now. Egypt is increasing the scope of its national park system, which will create even more safe havens for birds and increase the chances of tourists having a great bird-watching trip. There are even special tours offered for those who have an all-consuming passion for the hobby.
